What is Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction removes a tooth from its socket in the bone. While our goal is always to save your natural teeth, extraction is necessary when the tooth is beyond saving due to decay, infection, or other serious dental problems. Our experienced dentist, Dr. Dave Firmage, specializes in simple and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth.

Simple vs. Surgical Extraction

  • Simple Extraction: This is the removal of a tooth that is visible and above the gum line. It’s done under local anesthesia, which numbs the area around the tooth. Dr. Firmage will use special instruments to loosen the tooth and gently extract it. You may feel pressure but no pain.
  • Surgical Extraction: This is a more involved procedure when a tooth is not accessible, such as when it’s broken below the gum line or hasn’t fully erupted (common with wisdom teeth). In this case, Dr. Firmage may need to incision in the gum and remove some bone tissue to access the tooth. Surgical extractions are done under local anesthesia, but sedation options such as nitrous oxide or moderate IV sedation are available to help you relax.

Why Tooth Extraction May Be Necessary

There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted:

  • Severe Decay or Damage: When a tooth is too damaged by decay or trauma to be filled, crowned, or root canaled, it’s the next best option.
  • Infection: If an infection has reached the tooth’s pulp and can’t be treated with antibiotics or root canal therapy, removal may be necessary to prevent the disease from spreading.
  • Overcrowding: In preparation for orthodontic treatment, one or more teeth may need to be removed to create space for alignment.
  • Gum Disease: Advanced gum disease can loosen teeth, making them candidates for extraction.

Before Your Tooth Extraction in Sherman

At Gray Oak Family Dental, we believe in preparation so everything goes smoothly and stress-free. Before your extraction, you will have a consultation with Dr. Firmage where he will:

  • Review your medical and dental history.
  • Discuss anesthesia and sedation options
  • Explain the procedure
  • Give you instructions for pre and post-operative care.
  • Discuss tooth replacement options such as implants, bridges, or partial dentures.

It is a great time to ask any questions and express any concerns you may have. We want to ensure you feel informed and comfortable going into your procedure.

During and After the Procedure

During:

On the day of your extraction, you’ll be made comfortable in our Sherman office. Depending on your needs and preferences, you’ll receive local anesthesia and possibly sedation. Dr. Firmage will then extract the tooth and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

After:

After your extraction, you may want to take a day or two to rest at home. If you’re itching to get back to your routine, start with gentle activities like a peaceful walk through the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Avoid strenuous exercise, and stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. It’s also a good idea to avoid the tempting treats at local spots like Fulbelli’s Restaurant until your mouth has healed.

Most patients can go back to their normal activities in a few days. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as excessive bleeding or severe pain, call our office.

Tooth Replacement

If you’ve had a tooth extracted, consider replacing it, especially if the gap is visible or affects your bite. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to shift, bite misalignment, and difficulty chewing and speaking. Dr. Firmage will discuss your tooth replacement options:

  • Dental Implants: A permanent solution that looks and functions like a natural tooth.
  • Bridges: A prosthetic tooth attached to adjacent teeth.
  • Partial Dentures: A removable option for one or more missing teeth.
